college magazine analysis
On the cover of this magazine you can see
a cover star which is a student. This is similar to music magazines as they
usually have cover stars on their magazines too, however the difference is that
the cover star is smiling on the college magazine whereas music magazines
usually have cover stars that look serious to display other emotions reflecting
the music. The college uses a cover star that is smiling to show that she is
enjoying her student life at the college that she is attending.
The background used
in this magazine is also a lot brighter and the lighting is more natural to
create a happy and peaceful vibe. In music magazines the background is usually
very dark or just plain white and shadows and bright lighting is used to create
certain atmospheres.
Like most music magazines the masthead is
at the top of the magazine and there are numerous cover lines to entice the
reader into reading and buying their magazine. On this magazine the masthead
has been placed behind the cover star which implies that the magazine is
confident that their readers can tell that their magazine is about college and
they do not necessarily need to put their name out to show that. Furthermore
the cover lines used on this magazine are related to college drama and gives
tips that college students may need/use.
Unlike music magazines this magazine does
not include a skyline and there is no a strapline for this magazine. Also there
is no main cover line because the cover star used for this magazine is not
famous and there is not a story to write about them. Music magazines usually
have a main cover line about their cover star which is usually the story on
their DPS.

Music genre choice
The genre I have chosen to analyse is Rock. I have chosen this genre because I used to listen to rock music and so I have a bit of knowledge on how that genre of music is like. Furthermore I have many friends that listen to rock music therefore it would be helpful later on in my coursework when I need to do audience research and when I need feedback on my magazine. With the knowledge and experience of rock music that I have it would be easier to create a magazine suited to the general audience of rock music, as I would be able to produce content that rock fans are interested in.
Rock music originated from rock and roll and evolved throughout the years to become its own genre. It has been around since the 1950s and 1960s. Many famous bands come from the rock genre like, My Chemical Romance and Queen. Over the course of time many sub genres to rock music have been developed like pop punk, soft rock and punk rock.
Rock music is generally seen as an expression of youth rebelling against society and conformity. People usually view listeners to rock music as goths or emos due to the punk culture in 1970.Traditionally rock music is centred around electric guitars, drums and bass guitars.
The magazines I will be analysing are Kerrang and Q magazine which are two popular magazines linked to rock music.

Evaluation on DPS induction task
Evaluation
For my double page spread I did some research on Neru before
I wrote the article. I researched more about other names Neru has as a producer
and different interpretations of the songs I was reviewing. Furthermore I
looked at some statistics for these songs and I listened to them to analyse
them more in full detail. I mainly wrote about the meaning of the songs and why
I liked listening to them. I wrote about symbolism and some of the lyrics used
in the song to further support the meaning behind the song. I provided an image
from the music videos of the symbolism used in the song. I looked at different
layouts for double page spreads however due to the excessive amount of text I
had I had to stick to a relatively simple layout to fit all the text in.
The skills I learnt on Idesign were how to add text and images.
Furthermore I learnt more about the layout of double page spreads and that
objects and text need to stay in a certain frame to avoid getting cut off. I
learned how to set the whole background colour and make an image fit into a
frame proportionately. I also learnt how to do a drop cap for my article on Idesign.
I experimented with different text alignments and columns to see what looked
best on my DPS.
Something I could have improved was my layout. I could have improved
my DPS by condensing some of the text. Because there was so much text
everything on my DPS looks very close together and squashed. I felt like I
could have added more colour to my DPS as it does look very plain especially
with the large amount of text used. I tried to make my DPS stand out more by
adding tears falling in the background to relate with the logo but overall it
still looked quite boring. I think it would have been better to lay out my DPS
with one page having only an image and the other page with just the text and
extra images. That way it would be more eye catching and less dull.
